Cultural Program

For the first Gay Games in 1982, that motto of encouragement referred only to athletes. However, today thousands of international, multi-cultural organizations and artists have accepted the challenge, participated in the Cultural Festivals of the Gay Games, and experienced the personal reward of the Gay Games. At Gay Games Amsterdam 1998, the combination of Cultural Festival events and locally produced performances offered thousands more the opportunity to explore their creativity, talents, beliefs, and histories. In doing so each and every person challenged the stereotypes from which oppression grows.

The Cultural Festival of the Gay Games has become an integral part of this quadrennial event which brings together people from around the world. Based on principles of inclusion and participation, the Gay Games welcomes all people without regard to their sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, political belief, physical ability, athletic/artistic ability, or HIV status. There are no minimum standards to participate at the Gay Games; the only requirement is a desire to support the ideals of the Games. When accepting the Gay Games' challenge to reach for one's personal best in artistic, cultural, and sporting activities, all Gay Games participants become winners in life.

By creating a safe and accepting environment, the Gay Games offers participants the opportunity to express themselves openly and to experience the camaraderie and validation of art, culture, and sport; the experience can be a highlight in one's lifetime.
